I always remove the rocks & plants first.
the fish second (try to keep them in a stress free environment)
and wash the gravel before I remove it from the tank.
I find that an old dust pan or one of my grandkids toy shovels works best.
Should be fun to modify a wet/dry vaccum to suck out the muck at the bottome of the tank, but then you'ld still have to clean it before you put it in the next tank.'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

get a 1-1/4" hose and just start a siphon and it will remove it. Run it outside and it drains fast!!380G For Sale $3000 Acrylic tank & stand
