Re: Stupid newbee water change question!!

Ek pretty much said what I was thinking, that even though they are a cold water fish, it's consistancy that really matters. So if they're normally swimming around in 70 degree water and doing well, then I'd just make the replacement water a similar temp. And like brownsnout said, one gallon in 19 shouldn't change the temp too drastically, but does that mean that when you do water changes you only take out one gallon? If so, then that's probably okay. What is the temperature in the tank normally? And does it significantly decrease after a water change?

Re: Stupid newbee water change question!!

The temp in the tank usually fluctuates from 73 to 68 degrees F depending on the temp of my apartment.  The water changes have no significant effect.

The reason why you're not supposed to use the hot water side in due to the copper that's leached from the water heater.  As you all know fish and shrimp are especially sensitive to trace amt of copper.

Crayfish/crawfish are also very sensitive to copper in the water.  It could be most or all inverts are, but I'm not positive on that.

Even if you don't have copper lines in your own house, upstream from there may have copper.  I doubt water companies heat water before or during delivery, but I always just use from the cold tap just in case.

copper is bad for any invertebrates in high amounts.
