A friend might break down his SW tank and if he does, I may buy the tank and stand. He said its a 55 gal show tank. What is a show tank and what are the dimensions?

Show tank usually just means that its the tank that is for show. Or look pretty not one of those ugly ones that you have in a room that has fish in it. Ie my 330G is a show tank but my 90G isnt

By the way size doesnt dictate show or not its how the tank looks and so on. You can have a 55G show tank just as much as you can have a 210G show tank

OK thanks. I asked how long it was and he kept stretching his arms out so I thought maybe a show tank was a longer tank or something.135 gal Fahaka Puffer
150 gal Threadfin Acaras, Angels, Red Spotted Severum, Gold Severum, and a Silver Dollar
185 gal Demasoni, Yellow Labs, Venustus, Rustys, Plecos, Clown Loaches, and Sharks

Well actually that is not true. a 55 Show Gallon tank is taller than the normal 55 and If I remember correctly is like 60 gallons.
A number of the manufactures sell a "SHOW" aquarium which is usually 1-3" taller than the normal.
55 PLUS SHOW AQUARIUM 48½ x 13½ x 23
55 Gallon48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21

Showing my age here but back in the early '70 we would have aquarium shows in the local Malls and each entrant would bring his tank and set it up with landscaping, plants and decorations to his/her taste. HAS would provide a judge and ribbons and sign up lots of new members.
My first "Show Tank" Was an ALL-glass 10g tank. (Most of us had metal frame tanks at the time) It did not look like a tipical 10g tank. It was the same front dimensions but only 2/3 as deep as a standard 15g tank (12" x 12" x 24") My "Show Tank" was 24"w x 12"h x 8"d.
I think the term "show tank" & "breeder tank" have come to represent dimensions. (Show tanks have more frontal area, breeder tanks have more depth/volumn)Last edited by PhishPhreek; 12-20-2009, 06:17 PM.'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
