  • Water testing....FOR FREE!!!!

I'm still new to the aquarium world. I was close to buying my own water testing kit. But, after a little web surfing i found that PetsMart does this for FREE. I just took my water sample today and took only a couple of minutes. Not to shabby...Just figured i would share. I know i'm not the only new person...

    Testing :
    Ammonia :
    Nitrate :
    PH :
    Alkanility :
    Hardness :
    Chlorine and Chloramine :
    Salinity :
    240 and 35 Cichlid tanks

African Cichlids work well in Houston tap water, IMO. I wouldn't worry about tryin to reduce the pH too much. Messing with water parameters opens up a whole can of worms. I assume this is a new tank... once cycled, your ammonia will be zero.

        Looks good!

BTW... thanks for sharing about the free testing at Petsmart. I think a lot of the LFS will do this as well if you ask them.

Stay away from the pH upper or pH downer. It is not a good idea. Your pH is perfect just out of the tap, no need to try to change it.

If there ever was a need to change it, there are better ways to do it than with the upper/downer stuff on the market. They can cause pH swings which is much more harmful for your fish than the pH from the tap. The guy at the LFS probably meant well, but those products are highly frowned upon by the aquarium community as a whole (not just here, but on every board from every country I've been on). They are bad news. Stay away from them.
