  • Aqueon/Python Water Changer

Has anyone used the Aqueon or the Python water changer?
    It's this: http://www.aqueonproducts.com/produc...er-changer.htm

I was looking at it and it seems that your faucet needs to have the little ridges for the adapter to screw onto, but all of my faucet are smooth around the circumference. I don't know how the adapter would screw on. I want to use it, but I don't know if it would even attach.

    Any help?

    Thanks!

Most faucets have an aerator and strainer screen. That's likely the part that you're seeing that's smooth. It unscrews and you're left with either a male or female thread which, hopefully, the adapter that comes with it fits. If not you can always rig something up with the parts from your local home improvement. Just go in there with the one you have and the manufacturer of the faucet if you can figure it out...but for the most part they're pretty universal.

I have both, Aqueon and Python, brands of water changers. They connect exactly the same. I recommend that you get the brass adapter in place of the plastic one that normally comes with them.

Between the two, I have to say that I much prefer the Aqueon brand. I prefer the way the water switch is at the faucet and how you change from small to large tubes. The Python brand never worked very well for me. It always leaked water at the faucet, and I had to turn the water off to switch from intake to outflow. But with the Aqueon brand, you just flip the lever with the water still running. I like this so I can adjust the temperature to match my tank water, and then easily switch to fill. If you look at both of the faucet connections, you'll see what I mean. The Python requires that you twist the whole bottom part while the Aqueon uses a lever.

Here's the python connector. You twist the lower part to change the water from syphon to fill.

Here's the Aqueon with the lever.

I see now. I tried to remove the strainer, but the strainer was the male part and I was confused as to how I would attach the water changer adapter and what you said makes sense that they would include the plastic adapter if I am understanding you correctly. That adapter screws into the faucet, right?

I have heard that the Aqueon is much better than the python water changer and that the python one leaks a lot. I am curious though, is there a particular reason why you prefer the brass over the plastic one that it comes with?

The threads are a lot easier to strip on the plastic ones, plus for my faucet it is a total of 3 pieces. Two of them are adapters plus the python valve itself. I bought a one piece metal adapter at Home Depot to connect to my python hose. I only use the fitting that attaches to the hose not the valve itself since I am only using hose to fill tank and not drain them. The fittings are located in the plumbing section where the faucet adapters are not the regular plumbing fittings are.

                Exactly.

For the reason algarciajr gave. The plastic ones can get messed up too easily if you start to screw it in wrong. Once it starts going wrong, the plastic threads can get chewed up, making it that much harder to align it. You won't have this problem with the brass adapters. Considering how many times you will take the adapter on and off, it's well worth the few extra dollars for the brass adapter.

If you haven't taken the aerator off the faucet for a long time, it may be difficult to get it off the first time, usually because of mineral build-up from our hard water. If that happens, put something protective around the aerator and use pliers to get it off. Then clean it with Lime-A-Way or CLR. Make sure you pay attention to how the different parts are put together since the aerator can come apart.

When screwing the brass adapter or the aerator back on, I have also found it helpful to first start off screwing it in backwards until you feel the threads line up. You'll know when it clicks into place. Then you can usually screw it in very easily.

This is probably overkill, but the first 3 pictures on this page shows you what you'll be doing. Hopefully, this will make better sense when you see a picture: http://healthierwater4u.com/Manuals.html

                  --- Faucet, Female thread

                  ---
                  | | Strainer, male thread on top, smooth on bottom. You remove this piece.

                  ---
                  | | Adaptor, male thread on top, male thread on bottom. You add this.

                  | | Python, female thread on top.

Some adaptors are plastic and the threads are worn out easily. Try to get a metal adaptor.
