is it safe to put a ripped off branch inside of my tank?.... with leaves and all

  • #2
    Depends...

    What type of tree?

What type of fish you keeping in the tank?

    Big big the tank?

    What type of filtration?

    How often your water changes?

I would assume yes with out additional information.

just a small tree near the house, looks more like a bush with non-weak leaves... fish are some SA cichlid, 55 gal.... filtration is emperor 400, water changes once a week(roughly)... just curious, still semi-new to this

        Should be fine.

I don't think you can kill a SA cichlid.

The only branches I know of that are safe to do this are willow branches.

I'd be worried about pesticides having been sprayed on/around the tree. Also, what about sap? And the newer the wood the more tannins will be leached into the water. The SA cichlid probably won't like the lower pH, so you'd really have to stay on top of those water changes. And you can't just boil it for a couple of hours...you'd want to boil it for several hours to make sure it's heated all the way through for a while so any parasites and other nasties are killed.

              Personally, I wouldn't do it.

Really? I didn't know that, good info. Thanks!

And I have to agree with Traci, too. I wouldn't do it.

Yeah, MB, back when I was first getting into planted tanks I'd read an article in TFH about using willow branches for algae control. I've seen it suggested on websites since then.

Scroll down about halfway where it talks about green water cures.
