Don't listen to myjohnson. HOBs are great.

The bloom has been going on for a week? Is it a milky-white cloudy, or something that looks different?

If you can, post a picture. If not, that's okay. :)

It shouldn't last much longer. Water changes might make it stay longer, but sometimes that's necessary if the ammonia and nitrite are high. But like myjohnson said, I've really only had bacterial blooms last for a couple/few days.

How much water do you remove during a water change?

How often are you doing your water changes?
I ate my fish that died.

Check your ammonia levels, ammonia may rise to dangerous levels during the bloom, also reduce the ammount of food, add more aeration and do water changes (big ones... 50%-75% every day).
Hob is a good way of filtration don't listen to myjhonson, he is a piky rich lawyer with a baller equipments... lol

What kind of substrate do you have in the tank. A friend of mine had some blue gravel in one of his tanks and it kept making it cloudy every few days. He changed t out for some sand and never had the problem again.

I use the relyable old Tetra / Whisper power filters from the 10 (90gph) for 5 - 10g tanks to dual 60s on my 40 breeder & 55g tanks.
Some of mine were 2nd hand when I bought them 10 years ago and they still work fine. The parts are easy to replace and available at LFS & online if you don't already have them. I usually pick up a few each year at garage sales & auctions so I have plenty of parts. The filter bags are also easy to install and readily available. Other than having to clean the impellor well with a battery brush, the only problem I have had is the magnet seperates from the impellor and has to be superglued back. Even if you don't replace them on schedule, they still keep working.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                  Re: Need a good filter?

My substrate never gave me a problem the first month so I am pretty certain that it is a bacteria bloom.

Are you running an air pump on this tank? If you are, put a sponge filter on it. I overstocked my 26g and it would get a smell before it was time for my weekly water change. I put a hydor III on the air pump and it cleared up. Theoretically it doubles your filtration and they're like 7 bucks at HAW.
