  • Tank ideas

I noticed that we started getting quite a few people asking about what types of fish to keep in a XX gallon fish tank. I was thinking we could come up with some sort of master list encompassing everything just to give people ideas. Something for standard sizes say . . .10g-125g. After we come up with ideas, perhaps someone can edit/combine/synthesize y'alls thoughts and create n article out of it.

I know there are a billion+ possibilities, so maybe we could classify it as:
    Peaceful; Semi-Aggressive; and Aggressive
or perhaps by location (and have one as mixed) like:
    Native; Asian; Tanganyikan; ...
Thoughts? Is this even something that y'all think would be helpful?

Let me start. If you think something isn't a good idea, say so:

    10g:
    • Neolamprologus multifasciatus colony
    • Guppies or tetras (2inches or less) in a planted tank
    • Shrimp
    • arowana
    • 1 dwarf gourami, some tetras, and cories

    Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

      Good idea!

What about including 'difficulty' as a category - classifying tanks also by their level of difficulty (hardy fish, demanding fish, etc.)?

I think cichlid forums gives some pretty good cookie cutter options for cichlid in various sized tanks.

          Here is the link http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...rence_list.php

Are you saying that we shouldn't create something since cichlid-forum already has tank suggestions? Or are you saying that we should use those as a guideline? Just wondering....

I think this is a great idea. We can still do it even if CF got a list b/c we do all fishes and they only do cichlids.

Another idea maybe is to create this as a sticky thread and have people add on their suggests. The person that starts the sticky thread can then edit it to make it a master list. Once we feel it's completed we can then turn it into an article.

Great idea! Maybe even a chart of which fish can mix with which and what fish will eat/fight/kill which fish. I saw one years ago for saltwater fish...
                215g Malawi Peacocks and Mbuna
180g Tropheus Ikola and Bemba and Clown Loaches
58g Bristlenose breeding and grow out

I like the idea of adding a difficulty option as well. Just throwing some more ideas out there. Most of these are based on tanks that I have done at some point.

                      55g:
                      • (10-15) Labidochromis species tank
                      • (12-24) Ps. demasoni species tank
                      • mixed malawi mbuna tank
                      • convict cichlid species tank
                      • Gourami/ Danio/ Barb/ Corydoras tank
                      • Apistogramma/ Pelvicachromis pulcher planted tank with tetras as dithers

yeah, but the hard part is getting people to agree.

Who will be in charge of that?

Not everyone will agree. Some sort of consensus will have to be made. But so far I'm the only one that has posted any ideas. . . lets cross that bridge when we come to it.

                              I really like the idea.

I know I could use something like this about now.

I'm driving myself nuts (+ a few others) trying to determine the best stock for my 125.

Filters are on and water is flowing. It's time for fish.

Right now I'm studying Frontosa and all the variants and how they look based on each part of the lake, it's amazing how different they look from one area to the next.

I know Trophs are the same way.

You could point out which parts of lakes produce the best looking fish have the best reputation etc etc maybe through a points system.

You could also add a $ value type field. Frontosa range from a few dollars to 30+ for fry.

I better stop I could make this thing really complicated to build.
