  • ?s About Rocks

My parents have some leftover rock they used to pave part of their backyard and I think I can talk them into letting me have it for future tank projects. I have no idea what kind of rock it is, mom says she doesn't remember specifically; it's flat, tan and gray colored with orangish-brown streaks on some of the rocks.

Is there anything I need to do to test if it is safe? I've read to boil it for a while to see if it stays hard, will soaking it for long periods of time work as well or does it have to be boiled. Is it necessary to test the water to see if anything dissolved out of it?

Sounds like flagstone to me. It's a form of sandstone and should be fine for your tank. just clean it good. I would not boil it just soak it in water and or blast it real good with water. A pressure washer or car wash works good.
