  • Eheim filter for 72G - Questions

    I am upgrading from a 20g to a 72g.

I am looking to buy an Eheim filter for my 72G freshwater.

    Should I get the Eheim 2215(upto93g) ?
or Eheim 2217(upto 159G) if I want to upgrade to a larger tank in the next year or two?

What extra components do I need to complete a filter system. all included in Eheim?

Also, shall I buy a used one? I know there is no guarantee but can I take a chance for 50% off retail.

How reliable are the online guys like www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com. They have cheaper Eheim.

Sorry too many questions. Please help this beginner

I have a 2217 on my 72 gallon tank and I have been very happy with it. I would suggest that you use a surface skimmer. The skimmer I am using I got at City Pets. I can't remember the brand.

For your outlet, I would use the flat and wide (fan shaped) nozzle. I can get good disturbance on the surface in my tank. I don't like the spray bar.

For the inlet, I use the skimmer. It pulls off the bottom and top of the tank at the same time.

For $145, I would go brand new. I have had good luck with used, but that is a pretty good price.
      Jarrod - Houston, Texas
150 gallon - my African cichlid monster tank (I know it isn't a big as yours)
17 gallon - Threadfin rainbows and corys lightly planted
5 gallon - planted red cherry shrimp breeder
3 gallon - planted red cherry shrimp breeder

        Thanks for the tips !

Currently I am looking at Eheim used for $85. If that doesn't work out, I will visit HAW for a brand new.

I would get the 2217 brand new from Dustin over at HAW . I only buy used when I know the owner and know how he maintains his equipment .
