  • Lighting for my cichlid set up

OK, so I am wanting to know what would be the best lighting to put on my 150 cichlid set up? I have seen posts where people have high dollar lighting and don't know what the big deal is. Are T5 bulbs any good? I currently have 2 36'' light fixtures on the top of my aquarium, but what are the best bulbs (reasonable prices) to go with? I have BP's, yellow labs, a couple of jewels and fixing to purchase more. Do the bulbs have anything to do with bringing out the colors in the fish? Thanks:angel:

    It's brighter.

It depends on which type of cichlids you have.

If you have deep water fish, like frontosa, then I would recommend not getting super bright lights.

If you have algae grazing cichlids, like tropheus, then you want to get good lights to grow algae as they are custom to that in the wild.

    Is it needed, no.

Marineland 36" LED fixtures are awesome and in my opinion, the best light for all fish. Its bright enough for Tropheus and Malawi cichlids and dim enough for Frontosa and south Americans. They are cheap too.

yeah, LED is the new kid on the block.

PAR readings are high but the light doesn't look too too bright like MH/HQI.

Oh ok great, well the only fish I have now are 2 blood parrots, a yellow lab and 2 red jewels. I am looking to put more fish in there but not until I get all of my decor that I want. So I guess the LED bulbs are the way to go? And what about the T5? What is the difference between LED and T5? The brightness? Also I have seen the moonlight bulbs, are these of any help or a waste of money?

Marineland Double Bright LED lights are the way to go IMO. I have 2 36" fixtures on my 180g wc moba tank.

Check out the same LEDs and how they are set up at the Project Pescado post on this site.

Hey Ron I see you went ahead and got those led fixtures man. You should hook us up with some vids or pics whenever you have the time. Curious to see how good they look with those Mobas of yours.

I have some old school High Output T-12's on my 240. They put out a lot of light. 4 bulbs total for a total of 440 watts. I have use 12000k bulbs and It really makes the fish pop. This is a old school lighting set up but it will get the job done and you can find used ones for pretty cheap.

I love t5s for freshwater tanks and reef tanks. The bulb colors are endless. I have a little ATI sunpower on my tank - awesome light.

LEDs are coming a long nicely. Also look at the ecoxotic stunners and panorama.
