  • Tank question

I'm picking up a tank tomorrow. Automotive wax was used in it to remove hard water spots. What should I wipe the tank down with to make it safe for fish?

take hot water mixed with vinegar and place it on paper towels or small hand wash clothes....and soak either and place on the glass for up to 20 minutes or more....

If the tank is small enough....lay it on its side as you soak each pane of glass.....

test the glass with a razor blade first and look for signs of heavy auto wax build up...if you find little or no wax build up.....continue cleaning with more hot water and vinegar....look for signs of auto wax on the silicone seals as well....

Needless to say, this tank needs a good thourough cleaning.....use plenty of vinegar ...

    Good Luck...

Hopefully others will have even better information to assist you....

The glass is spotless. Completely clean. All i'm saying is, is it safe for fish or should the tank be wiped with alcohol or something else to make it fish safe. I'm not sure if there are any serious chemicals in wax that may kill fish. But, as far as the glass goes. It's cleaner than a new one.

If you want a quick and easy fix.....wipe the tank down real good with vinegar, set the tank up......and add some mollies or other fairly cheap tropical fish....wait 2 weeks and by then, if all fish are still alive......you are most likely good to go..... I have no idea what lasting effect if any, auto wax will have on aquarium glass...

Cool. That's more like the answer I was looking for.
