  • Filter question

I was graciously given a filter by someone, who said the pump was rated for over 300 gallons. I used it on my 36 gallon tank until I got the 125 gallon, and it kept the tank (obviously) crystal clear for weeks before needing to clean it. I decided to get rid of the sump (for sale still) due to the rating on the pump and the hassle of getting the sump setting correct. In about three weeks, the pump was so clogged it reduced the water output by about half. Does this thing really look like it is rated for 300 gallons??

I put my hand in the picture for a frame of reference.

Is that an Eheim 2213, 2215, or 2217? Does it have the model number on it?

Yeah also since the biggest this filter can possibly be is a 2217 model then you would need at least (2) 2217's. If it's a 2215 then consider adding either a Fluval FX5, Eheim 2260(62), or hook up that wet dry of yours. If it's a 2213 which I hope for you that it isn't, then consider selling it and upgrading to something bigger. As far as the wet dry we can help you with any questions you might have as far as the settings, we just need to know the pump model and what type/size overflow you were using when you had trouble with it.

Don't matter what it is.... a 2217 is not rated for a 300g.

Sigh, it's a 2213. The problem that I had with the sump is that I couldn't get the suction to equal the return rate. I just didn't want to wake up with my apartment flooded or the sump burned out.

oh my.....LOL. yeah, let's get that sump hooked up pronto. your pump is most likely too strong for the overflow so you just need a smaller pump. thing is we can't tell what pump you need without at least seeing some pictures of the overflow box (unless you have a built-in overflow). you could either sell the bigger pump and buy a smaller one, trade the pump with someone on here plus some cash from their side, or sell the wet-dry sump filter and buy a canister filter. i would run the sump since you already have it and i actually saw pictures of it in the buy/sell/trade forum and you have a pretty good one. let us know what you decide you wanna do.

I hooked up the emperor 400 (rated for 80 gallons) that came with it, and the water has cleared up a bit. I guess I'm in the market for another canister pump, because I really don't like the sump.

Just put a ball valve on the return line. That way you can control flow.

You can do this, or if you really hate wet drys that much you can trade someone your wet dry filter and pump for their canister filter. The good thing about trades is that no one has to spend more money but both parties get what they need or want. With your asking price, trading for an Eheim 2217 or Rena XP3 would be an even swap.

This is going for a really good price (best i've seen). XP3s are really good by the way, and this particular model will out-perform the Eheim 2217 in the mechanical filtration department. You can run this along with your 2213 and Emperor hob.
