Re: How many gallons is this tank

Given that the hexagon's measurements were on the outside, it will be slightly less than my estimate (to account for the thickness of glass). 42 is a normal hexagon size.

While assuming  the tank is a cylinder is great for approximating, it doesn't help at all for knowing the exact amount of water that the tank holds. That is why I switched majors from engineering in college. They wanted me to assume that a chicken was a sphere in order to multiply a few less numbers.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

In the "real" world, we have to make approximations all the time and alacrity is critical.

Trust me, I'm a professional guesser (i.e. actuary).

Didn't we both arrive at about the same answer? 42G?

Place a one gallon container of water in the tank.
          Fill the tank completely.
          Remove the gallon jug.
measure the distance from the top of the tank to the water surface.(.6")
divide the tank height by the height of one gallon ( 25.25/0.6 ) = 42gal

Works for almost all tanks except chicken shaped tanks
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
