    Moving

    Hello everyone,

    I am going to be moving to a new apartment that only about 10 minutes away and I am trying to find out the best way to move my fish. Currently I have a 55g with 8 Cichlids. Last time I moved all but 1 died during the move, in which I got the bags that the fish store give you and filled it with the water from the tank and put them in there. Last time I moved it took 30-40 minutes to drive to the new apartment.

    I would suggest clean buckets with aerator. you can find the buckets/aerators from places like Academy or other places that sell live bait fish. You simply use your existing tank water and try to keep them as secure as possible during the move. Maybe even cover the bucket with a towel or plastic wrap?

        How much time you have left before your move ?

        Dont feed your fish for 24 hours before the move.  This way there will be less production of waste.  I would lower the temp in your Aquarium about 4-6 degree's  Reason is that the colder the water the better the water will hold O2.  Move your fish in two buckets.   Once you have cleaned the tank/setup back up at the new place (this is what is going to take time I am sure...  I would only add 20-25 gal of Fresh Water to the tank..  (yes I know its not full... now take the 1-2 5g (no fish buckets) and empty them back into the fresh water... this will give you 30g of water in the tank.  Make sure that the water is close to the same temp as the bucket with the fish.  Set the temp to be at the setting that you pulled the fish out at (ie hopefully around 71-73 degree's).  Acclimate the fish by blending the water in the bucket and the tank..  Since the tank and the bucket are "cold" for the fish they will have less problems with acclimation to a a warmer temp water...
        Once the fish are in the tank let them settle in...   Wait another 12 hours and then feed them (underfeed them), each day increase the temp by 1-2 degree's until you have reached your desired temp level.   Your fish should survive the trip without dying on you.

        PS DONT clean your filters in the move.. only clean the tank, sand / gravel, stones for fish waste...

        Just my 2 cents worth..

        The less time you have before moving the higher the risk because the hotter the water is the more the temp is going to change while you move and granted temp is not the biggest problem for a fish.   Make sure that you have an ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite testing kit handy

          i would use the move as an excuse to buy another tank and have it set up before you move the fish.

            moved a 55 2 -30s and a 26  myself recently 8 miles away...
            I used 5 gal buckets and battery operated aerators. Drain your tank water into the buckets. I kept as much of  the original water less 10-15% (as if I was doing a change) Dont clean the filters or substrate. Fill the buckets till the tank still covers the fish. NET them out and place them in the buckets. Start the aerator. Cover them. I drilled a hole large enough for an airline tube which I connected an airstone that I dropped into bucket. Also, added cover for them..preferably plants...rocks and ornaments may shift in transit hurting some occupants.

            Move the fish and tanks, replace your plants, rocks  and ornamentation Refill your tank with your tank water..check temp..though this time of year may not be issue..I did it in February. Restart your filters  Renet and place fish back in tank.

            All was fine.

              I moved a 55 gallon and 10 gallon over a two day trip. While considerably longer than your trip, I lost nothing in this move. I got some very thick stryoform coolers (the one's that Omaha Steak ships). I lined the coolers with a plastic bag. I got a battery operated air supply. I didn't feed for a few days before packing them. I also saved as much water as possible from the tanks.
