  • Aquarium Kits

Of the three places, Walmart, Petco and Petsmart does anyone have an opinion about their kit aquariums ?
I am thinking about buying a kit for my room mate's son who turns 8 in a month.
I am thinking of either the 20 or 29 gallon kit.

What do you all think?  Please understand yes I can buy something here cheaper, but being this is a birthday gift etc, and he would just not understand why used is better I want to buy him a tank in a box he can get gift wrapped.
I know I am going to have to teach him about cycling the tank and many other new things, that I hope he will have a fun tank in his room for years to come.

As much as I dislike Walmart sometimes cause it is so dirty they have the cheapest kits that I have seen and they hold up very well

I agree with Walter. I still have my first aquarium setup from 15 years ago.

            Re: Aquarium Kits

I wish I had all my tanks from back then.. I used to have 7 tanks in my room (well 6 and one tank in the living room) but when I moved from Denmark to the US, mom and dad told me I had to sell all of them :(
I promised myself that I would get back into fish again once I had a house and last year after 22yrs of living here I bought a house, which is why I am back into fish again.
An old friend of mine became my room mate because after his divorce he could not afford to have the kids fulltime and own a good place to live, and since I had the space I gave him the space.  Now both his kids wants fish and I bought his daughter last month a Betta tank and a Betta, now its the older Son's turn and I wanted to get him a 20-29 gal tank so he could have some more interesting fish.  I am so looking forward to see his face when he opens up the tank.

I think for the same price you could get a used 55, and for a child im sure the bigger used 55 would be more WOW factor than a new 20/29. Just a thought.

Briwnsnoutuk,  I have thought about it long and hard.  Right now I don't have any extra filters, lights, hoods etc., therefore I would have to purchase all of those items.  I am also limited to a specific space which is why I have to get a 20/29 gal tank (yes else I would have gotten a 55).  Looking hard for a kit which has a tank, heater, light, and filtration system with it included, I found that the kits that was comparable in cost was the ones from Walmart, Petco and Petsmart

Its the only way I get to go back and look at more fish each month..  get the kids involved and make them all want more :)

                    Re: Aquarium Kits

Check your LFS, I've seen some nice package deals at some and if it's missing a piece or two you can still toss it in tank.  If you explain the purpose  they may even work on the price for you.

In the olden days my LFS use to give away a 10g tank with any $25 fish purchase...... such a deal

yep, and then I had to buy gravel & stand & filter & hood & air pump & heater & ......... some more fish

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I still have my 20 gallon kit I bought at Walmart 10 years ago.  The tank still looks great but I had to replace the hood/lights about 5 years later and the filter (I don't remember when that was).  It has survived many moves and no leaks to report so far!
