  • What's the best heater?

I have a 210 gallon tank. What's a good heater for a tank that size? The guy at the fish store told me to just get a 500 watt heater, but when I look at the specs for a 500 watt heater I noticed it's made for a 130 gallon tank.

Rule of thumb say 3watts per gallon, so I will say 2 300w heaters.

Yeah I figured I would need two heaters. So there isn't a single heater with enough watts to power that tank?

Would you really feel comfortable with a bigger one that if it malfunctioned would fry the entire tank?

Well the way I thought was I rather risk one malfunction than worry about two, but if you guys think it's better to go with two heater then I'll go with two

go with 2 good quality heater like the eheim or hydor brand. If you are running canisters with your tank, hydor eth-300 inline heater is your best choice.

I second the eheim as an in tank heater, I love the two I have and plan on slowly switching my tank heaters over as budget permits.

Has there been any real studies showing how much loss in flow you get from inline heaters. I'm just curious. Seems like you would loose some in the return.

Getting back to the thread, I have no real preferance on type as long as they work.

I use JBJ 1000W heater on my 210 G tank and it's done a great job for me. Great heater with digital monitor ..and u can calibrate it to the temp of water in tank! It's a bit pricy but a great brand!

I have no way of measuring it, but I've got one of those Hydor in-line heaters on a Fluval 405, and I certainly haven't noticed any reduction in flow.

I think he means heat loss in the return line and subsequently having the heater turn on more often. I have the same concern about putting a submersible heater in a wet/dry.

I was also thinking of putting one in my wet dry. I just don't see the benefit though.

For me the benefit was to get as much equipment as possible out of the tank and under the stand. Purely aesthetic.
