I use the cheap knee high hose you can get at Walgreens (they are the Walgreen's brand).

They come in the package like this:

They are 2 for $1 and I can usually get 6 bags out of them. 4 if I'm using them for carbon in my large filters.

It's a very beautiful wood that takes some really nice shapes. It's usually sandblasted to get most of the bark off. It typically leaches very few tannins into the water, so it's really good for those cichlid tanks that typically aim for higher pH's.

Here's a pic of my tank that I'm working on right now. All 3 pieces in it are manzanita, but only the 2 larger pieces are sandblasted. The smallest piece on the left is not. (Pardon the cloudy water, I'm still workin on the tank. :) )

When I put some manzanita in my tank, a few days later, it had this blob-ish (is that a word? ), white stuff growing on it. It's pretty gross looking, and if you take the wood out of the tank, it has a really strong odor. IF you see this, don't panic (like I did). It's a fungus and it's common. Some fish eat it, and apparently after a while it goes away. I didn't wait for that to happen though. I removed it and scrubbed it off, then put it back in the tank. I did this until it quit coming back. Apparently it's very similar to the fungus that grows on old food in an aquarium.

Anyway, I know you haven't seen this, but I just wanted to go ahead and let you know it's okay....in case you do end up seeing this stuff. Can you tell it traumatized me a little? )
              TODAY I HAVE FUNGUS!!

Interestingly it doesn't smell... and it's really slimy... and it's only on the manzanita piece that's not sandblasted. Maybe it has something to do with the outer layer of bark. I scrubbed it off in the sink with a toothbrush.

BTW... +1 for the pantyhose. My dad had that idea when I got my first fish tank when I was 9 years old, a 55 gallon with a Fluval canister filter... and one day my mom commented that she had no more panty hose left... and my dad just snickered. ) He had stolen it all to use for the carbon and other media in the canister filter!!

aquabee - I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look of your tank!! I've done something similar in one of the troph tanks (manzanita and large round rock), but mine doesn't look as nice as yours. I'm impressed!!

                Ug...fungus. I hate that stuff.

So nice of you! I have to try to make it look as nice as possible cuz we just bought a 125g Moba tank for the bf's apartment and now he's making fun of my lil 8g nano and my new 20g long. So I've jazzed it up with a Koralia 240 circ pump and LEDs. The combo of those too makes a really gorgeous shimmer on the sand and the rocks. I wasn't sure whether I loved it or not but I've been staring at my empty lil tank for a while and I think it's growing on me (much like the fungus grows on manzanita! ha!). I'll start a new thread when I finish the tank and stock it. Not sure what's going in it yet... considering a pair of brevis and a couple sumbu comps (juvies) to form an eventual pair. Not sure how those guys'll get along in a 20 long. But I've heard of some success with proper scaping-- rocks on one side and to the back for the dwarf sumbu comps, and shells up front and to the other side for the brevis pair. We'll see!

And I've seen a couple pics of your mondo FISH HOUSE and it's incredible!! Rock on. Oh, and boo fungus.

I have purigen in my aquaclear with my discus and it works fine just put it between the sponge and the bag of white rock things. Just make sure you re-charge about once a month or when it turns really dark.

And do you have carbon in with it too? Or would that be redundant?
