    Re: Disciplining my Fish..

Have you thought about upgrading your tank from a 20 to a 55.. I mean as small as the tank is.. with that many fish in it no wonder the Koi had problems... isnt it a little hard for each of them to have their "own" side ??  and realistic... the 15" Oscar you have, should have a little more space.

Maybe you could use different colors or types of substrates and tell them very sternly that there are invisible lines designating their area and they are expected to stay in their own neighborhoods.  Explain to them how the honor system works and that violaters that are caught will be either netted and flushed or hooked and cooked

        Re: Disciplining my Fish..

This is how you can solve the problem.
Draw a line on all 3 sides of the tank. Put up a sign that says do not cross or coporal punishment will be given out. Then just sit back & watch for which one crosses it first.
Now when you see which one it is. You reach in with your hand (do not use a net as this is to kind for the little SOB) & snatch him/her out. Now get a pot just big enought to hold him/her in fill it 3/4 full of water & put a battery operated pump in it to (cause you not want to kill it just a little torture is all).
Put every thing in the icebox for about 3 or so minutes. This is why you use the air pump it help keep the ice from forming on top incase you forget about him for an extra minute or so. Now before you put him/her back into the tank. You will need two tooth picks & one rubber band. Put one tooth pick on each side of the trouble maker & use the rubber band to secure them. If he/she is still able to swim as fast as before use another rubber band at the tail end. If you still have trouble with him/her. Go to the nearest fish store open up you wallet (dont forget to clean out the cob webs) & purchase them a new tank.

Am I the only one that uses a blender?  Put a clear piece of acrylic with holes at the bottom of the blender just above the blades......

It seems to me that most of you are the "spare the rod and spoil the fish" kind of folks, but for me, well, I'd take away privileges first.  Maybe phone restrictions, no TV, losing IPOD privileges, etc.

I've got some fish.. a couple of assorted Cichlids and my most recent purchase, a Koi Goldfish.

heres the deal, some of the Cichlids (all of them) have been picking on my Koi.. now, I believe it's all in how you were raised and if you spare the rod you spoil the child so... well.. Ok I'll cut right to the chase, when they would start picking on the Koi (I named him Kevin) well, I'd stick my tazer (personal saftey device) into the water and just do a quick zap.. you know, enough to get their attention.

This works, everything in the tank kinda spazzes for a second, then they go hide in the rocks for a bit but the problem is, I think it's hurting Kevin too.

I guess my question is, is there a way to localise the punishment so that Kevin is not wrongly punished? I feel bad that he must pay for the bad manners of others.. and well, what do you all do to maintain order in your tanks?

One trick Betta breeders have developed is to get clear plastic drinking glasses and melt small holes in the bottom of the glass then when you need to isolate one fighting fish from another, you cover them with an upside down glass and anchor it in the gravel or place something heavy on the top.... sort of like putting MAGNITO in the glass cell.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
