  • fry question...and problem

i stripped some fry about a week ago from my cyps...to put in a 20 long to grow them out and add back to my 220 colony....when i put them in the tank they acted fine....they swim at the top of the tank like i would expect cyps to do....all are doing fine....i wasnt able to strip the female of all as i didnt want to stress here out more than i had.....well she spit 2 more fry into the 220 gallon tank and i was able to catch them a few days later..hidding among the rocks down at the base of the tank...there is pretty good flow in this tank so they have to work hard to hide and stay at the bottom in the rocks....when i caught them and moved them to the 20 they went straight to the bottom of the tank....now here is the problem after about 1 day they died.....never swimming to the top of the tank as the others.....now water and ranges are the same between both tanks...the only diffrence is fry tank has almost no current as the big tank....wandering if maybe swim bladder or something like that could of caused problem....other crazy thing was diffrence in color.....2 pulled from tank were very dark to match rock background but the ones i stripped are very light colored....wandering if anyone has any thoughts? if more info needed to figure out what the cause could of been please ask....thanks mickey

Something similar happened with my callos fry.

I stripped some and let some spit depending on how lazy I am.

Once, I did the same as you did....strip partially.

When I removed the fry to keep them in my fry basket they died like a day later.

My only guess is they didn't get much to eat and used a lot of energy to fight the current while in the main tank.

Maybe they would have died for those same reasons if left in the big tank.

Also, why so much flow in a cyps tank? I didn't know they needed that type of flow.
I ate my fish that died.

I would think they got stress out when you catch them out of the 220g, i dont know if you did it with 1 try or many try to catch them, also after you caught them then they have to get use to a new environment(20g) which they already have adapt to the 220g . Note these are newborn the less handling the better.

hey thai.....the flow is high because of the size of the tank....i dont have massive spray bars but i am running 2 fx5s and a 2028 eheim.....it just creates alot of current....i agree i took the spray bar off the eheim and just let flow run out end of intake tube....fx5 made a spray bar but drilled big holes on it so flow wouldnt be great...also am using just the one that came with the filter on the other one...i point towards side of tank so flow wont be great into main part of tank that the fish inhabit.....would like to here some other ways to keep current down if anyone has advice....thanks for the replys...mickey

caught fry less than a few minutes as it was hanging close to rock and it was pretty easy to coex into the net....maybe stress was the problem....i found one yesterday sucked into the suction on one of the fx5s yesterday....also found one today about an inch in a crevis on one of the rocks...i just left him...seems to be doing ok....there so much action in the tank smaller fish just seem to hide on the bottom of the tank...i have 5 or 6 fry that have grown to a couple of inches in the tank without ever messing with them....but they just dont look happy...never venturing to top of tank to school with the bigger colony....little cofused what to do about it maybe i should do nothing...

Maybe the netting and gulping of air along with the addition of different water params.

baby cyps are fragile. Changing tanks can stress them out alot. Very easy to kill until 1.5" IME

I think you should try using a baster or something similar to dose small live food down in the rocks, should get a quick growth spurt with these and should improve quickly.
