I know some of you change water directly from the tap to the tank. How? I mean, I have the gadget that attaches to the faucet and sucks the water out of the tank, and I know I can reverse the flow and use it to put water in the tank. What about the chlorine? When/How do you add the water conditioner? Now I fill up big buckets, let them sit for several hours, add conditioner, and lug them around the house. Is there an easier way?

There sure is!
When you use the Python (the siphon thingy that attaches to the faucet) simply put the required amount of water conditioner/dechlorinator into the tank before you start filling from the tap.
I recommend Prime for your dechlorinator, which is what many of us HFBers use and love. :)"Millennium hand and shrimp!"

Yupers!
You got it right on the money. Just reverse the flow and put water right back in the tank.
I add water conditioner when the new water starts filling in. I used an amount that would treat the WHOLE tank.
I believe this is the practice of most people here.
Personally, I also run my water through a whole house carbon bottle filled with 80 pounds of carbon. I shouldn't even have to treat the water...but I still do b/c the city has been known to make mistakes before and add more chemicals then needed into our tap water.I ate my fish that died.

I simply remove the water, add Prime to tank, and then refill directly from tap. It's perfectly safe with everything from plants, fish, inverts, and even fry. Been doing it for years.Vicki

Just in case you're asking how the mechanics of the python valve works:
The very bottom part of the valve assembly moves. To syphon, the bottom part is pulled down while twisting to the left. To fill the tank, lift up on the bottom part while twisting to the right.
I add conditioner the same as the others; directly to the tank while refilling.

Cudos to you for being overly cautious. I was the same way until talking to tangomike. Now I do just as everyone else stated above. I use Amquel Plus. Watch fish behavior 15-20 minutes after change. If anything seems weird add more quick. I use more than recommended in the beginning to be on the safe side. Fish can't od on water conditioner. Whatever you decide to do, stop breaking your back with those heavy buckets...*)Sharif*)

I know I am a little late adding my two cent to this thread but, I have not seen anyone say anything about the tempature of the water being added back to the tank. IMO, I always try to add the same temp. back to my tanks that I took out. I know it makes a differnce to my Fronts.300 W/C Burundi

I do the same as stated above , but I keep the stream of new water aimed directly at a thermometer . It is hard to judge water temp by feel .Don't tell fish stories where people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.
