    Re: From Gravel to Sand?

I don't think putting ice cubes in the tank would be good, either. But any kind of air movement above the water surface helps cool it down, too. Just in case this happens again.

I'd wait and see what the temps are when you get home. If they're going down, the fish should be fine. If they're not, a water change is a good idea.

You put 100lbs in a 75? I am trying to figure out how many pounds of sand I will need in my 125

          Re: From Gravel to Sand?

No, I put 100lbs in the 55gal. Actually I didn't put the entire bag in the 55gal.

But I put 160 lbs of moon sand in the 75gal if that helps??

Interesting - I put 100 lbs of sand in my 210g!

I put 120lbs in my 125g....and I thought it was too much.

We lost A/C a while back when it was pretty hot and what I did was put the ice cubes in gallon ziploc bags and threw them in the sumps..Then filled 20oz. bottles and froze them for the smaller tanks.

                Re: From Gravel to Sand?

Yeah, I have heard of folks using those blue ice bags before in their sumps to lower water temps......it should be pretty effective.

                  Re: From Gravel to Sand?

I put roughly 30-50 lbs in the 55gal. It's a fairly thin layer (about a .5-1") and I love the look.

Sorry, it's 120 not 160 lbs in the 75gal...but the layer is about 1-2" thick. Leave it to a amature to over-sand!!

Speaking of...few questions about sand. In the 75gal (tahitian moon sand)..how ofter do I need to 'stir' the sand to avoid gas pockets? Do I have to remove rocks and such to stir underneath them too? In the 55gal (sandblasting sand/gravel) do I need to stir this at all??

As for the temp, it had gotten back down to 80-82 F by the end of the night...no deaths :emtthumbs:

                    All right! That's good news.

About stirring - I'm not sure about this one. All my tanks are planted, so I rely on the roots and the snails (MTS) in the ones with sand substrate. And cories, too.

What's a good sand sifter besides cories and loaches?? Sounds like getting the MTS are usually with getting live plants..which I don't have any nor plan on getting any right now.
