They are not related at all, one is a Cichlid and the other is a Centrarch. They just share certain body shapes due to convergant evolution and their common names of bass due to both being similar and sought after for sport fishing. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Breakdown of Peacock Bass (Cichla) to genus. There are 15 different species that are listed, though evidence exists that more are very likely and geographic variants are common, possibly subspecies that are needing further study and genetic survey to determine relationships to other groups. Here is the breakdown of the Black Bass Genus (Micropterus) which contains 7 known species.Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order: Perciformes Family: Cichlidae Subfamily: Cichlinae Genus: Cichla
Cross breeding outside of family is literally unheard of naturally (discounting genetic splicing)Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Subclass: Neopterygii Infraclass: Teleostei Order: Perciformes Family: Centrarchidae Genus: Micropterus
Both can tolerate similar conditions, but the Centrarchs can tolerate much lower temperatures then Cichla.
They are an excellent example of convergant evolution in actions, both evolving to fit a specific form that is often selected for.
Convergent evolution describes the acquisition of the same biological trait in unrelated lineages.
