I will say I've placed a painted item in the tank after 24hrs and every discus I had got sick and eventually died. However I didn't use any heat gun, but I did cure in water. I've done it with items cured a week and had no problems, but just my experience. Krylon Fusion does work great. I may need to try using a heat gun.

To be extra sure, wait 24-48 and the soak it in water for another day or so before putting it into the tank. I've used items painted with krylon fushion a few hours after painting but I paint thin layers, heat the object before spraying and heat gun between layers.

whats the heat gun suppose to do?

when painting if you warm up the surface the paint adheres better and dries evenly on contact, then heat to dry between layers.

also speeds up the curing process

like baking paint or a car.

blow drier would work too for plastics, probably a better option but since I have a heat gun it works.

I used Valspar from Lowes and if covered well. I didn't tape the back and have several places that the paint got scratched off. Wish I would have protected it - too much trouble to move the tank and repaint. My paint does scratch off easily.

All paint does... It's smooth glass nothing sticks unless there is adhesive on it

Idk. I sprayed one of my tank and it's pretty tough.

I sprayed my tank with rattle cans too and its pretty scratch resistant... just gotta layer it right allow proper dry time between layers.

I don't think any normal bump, scratch or knick would scratch my background

Yea. Rattle cans are pretty durable compare to latex paint if you ask me. But over all I would go with latex for the easy removal if you decide on changing color.

I painted mines with latex and then just coverd the background with the plastic background and taped all around so it wouldn't peel
