Best thing i can think of is to find some sponge material like the one in the filter, cut it to fit over the intake. But dont leave a hole all the way thru just enough to cover the main suction part. The sponge with double as a pre-filter and distribution of the water curret. Hope that helps

If a sponge over the intake is clogging up that fast, try vacuuming the substrate/etc really thoroughly on your next water change, see if you can get some of the solids pulled out of the tank?

you can also buy bigger intake sponges, like those used for Reverse Flow Undergravel Filter systems that mount on powerheads. the more surface area of the sponge, the longer it takes to clog. you can also buy prefilters here:

Pond and Aquarium Filter Systems. Including Hydro Sponge, Fluidized, HOB, Internal, Prefilters, Skimmers, Fluidized, Reverse Osmosis, Sludge Remover.

I'm having the same problems on the intakes of my river manifold. The sponges are too fine. I'm going to buy some coarser sponge material at the lfs and make my own. I used what crazy42bmx suggested on my aquaclears. I just bought a replacement sponge and put a hole halfway down its length and slipped it over the intake. Keeps the fish and shrimp out and doesn't clog nearly as fast as the finer fluval sponges.

Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places?
