nicely done! congrats on the clear water. i love purigen, i use it to lessen the red color the driftwood leaches into my water. i like a little of it, it looks natural, but too much mopani makes the water so dark you can't see the fish! lol i agree that carbon does have its uses, i've just found that for myself, since i care for fish 50+ hours a week as my job, when i get home i tend to neglect my 7 tanks, and if you don't change the carbon regularly it can actually make the water dirtier, rather than cleaner as it starts to release pollutants back into the water.
    my fish house:
    2.5g- ramshorn hatchery
6g eclipse- yellow shrimp, chili rasboras, yellow apple snails
29g- geo grow-out, angels, 12"fire eel, dwarf frog, apple snails
45g- jade sleeper gobies, native killifish, feeder endlers

    75g-
2 oscars, parrot, silver dollars, albino channel cat, syno euptera, bichir, baby jaguar, convicts, yabby
    125g- fahaka puffer, rainbow shark
    and about a dozen bettas....

After reading everything about carbon on here, I opened my new aqua clear 50 and was wondering if it would hurt to put an extra sponge or extra biomax media instead of the carbon packet? Is it completely necessary to have it in there?

It would be beneficial to have the biomax and sponge in there and it wouldn't hurt to add an extra one of either in place of the carbon packet. If it were me, I would just put more biomax or purigen in place of the extra carbon packet.

mistahoo is right. i'd go with purigen all the way. and since you don't need as much of it as you would carbon, fill in the extra space with biomax!
