Ok heres the question. DO FISH SLEEP? Well sometimes I think they do and sometimes i think they dont. My clown loaches lay on there sides all the time for long periods of time, So its like there sleeping, some of my fish anchor theere selves in plants for hours. but some like my new percula clowns, and sebae clowns swim in place all night. so do some of my other fish. my severums usually lean up on the glass onthe bottom of the tank, and so do my jacks. but everyone else for the omost part swims. so.... whats the verdict, sleep or no sleep??

Re: FISH SLEEPING??
I think they do....
I have a wrasse in my NanoReef tank that actually builds a mucus nest that surrounds him in a rock crevice and he won't come out till morning. My Trophs all wedge in the holey rock or lay against it when the lights are off....very not normal if you see these guys during the day.
If it ain't sleeping it sure is resting.700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: FISH SLEEPING??
LOL! I was thinking about this the other night! In my 30g I have some green lyretail sailfin mollies and they always like to hide... Well, the other night I went over to the tank and one of the males was kind of resting in the plastic floating plants that I have in there for them and he didn't swim away and hide when I opened the lid. He was kinda steadily shaking his tail, but that's pretty much it. I stuck my fingers in there and touched him really lightly because I didn't want him to jump out and he didn't do anything. I went and touched him again and kinda moved him over a little and he acted kinda startled that time and swam away... Pretty interesting...it was like he was in a deep sleep and I woke him up.

Re: FISH SLEEPING??
All fish sleep.. but because in natural life when the sun sets etc it gets dark quick at lower levels of lakes and rivers...
Some fish especially those who are near the top of the water looks for the moon and uses the little light it gives to let them know of their surroundings. Other fish like deep water living Frontosa's it will freak them out if you put moonlight in the tank because they are used to going to deeper depths where its pitch black.. Remember fish cannot close their eyes, but when its completely dark they still have all their other senses running at full.
Fish needs rest and will take it.. Most loaches prefer the night and will become most active at night. Some hide in caves during the night..
It all depends.. I know like convicts like the complete darkness because if you shine a light at them they get agitated at night.

Re: FISH SLEEPING??
Yeah, my Kuhlii loaches love the dark. They swim up and down, up and down in the corners of the tank when it's dark and if I turn on the lights, they dive head first into the pea gravel that I use for substrate in that tank... I'm sooooo surprised they don't have brain damage by now, but they seem to like being under the gravel more than they like hiding in the little, plastic caves I have in there for them!

Re: FISH SLEEPING??
my angels demonstrate the whole sleep thing the best of any of my fish. If I go in and they are still sleeping, I find them on the bottom of the tank, colors all faded... and do not come running for food. Before I put a sponge over the filter they used to sleep "stuck" to the intake and every morning I could slide my hand in and set them free.5.5 fw fluval chi - class N top bar snake chested endlers/ red marble bn/ 4 stripe RCS/ pumpkin shrimp

Re: FISH SLEEPING??
The don't do it anymore....
They are always upright.... their colors fade in the dark. The canister is pretty powerful. Now they sit with the shellies and in between the plants. As soon as the sun rises, they color up and swim around. My angels are AWESOME!!
