Filter help!!

Okay so I need some opinions. I have a 30gal Bowfront, it will be housing discus fish.

What filter would you recommend?
A few options would be good, and please put why.

get a bigger tank. a 30 is to small for even just one discus. it would be a crime. you would need atleast a 55g for them.

I'll be upgrading to a 75 in about a month. Getting some to start, and waiting till 2 pair off so I can remove the rest.

+1 on a bigger tank if u can for them. Ideal filter would be a cannister, with a spay bar rather then tue jet type output as i think these fish dont like really strong current. Next would be a good hob, like an ac or bio-wheel type!

+1 on canister with a spray bar as far as tank size you should get them into a bigger tank as soon as possible. Discus don't like the excess flow

and the change of home to often will stress the heck out of them. i would wait for the bigger thank to go with discus. If they enjoy the 30 to much when you place them on the 75 and the water is not the same you may have trouble with them. also you may want to add some aeration to the tank. they need to have that water with quiet alot of oxygen

+1 on the bigger tank but if your gonna get a filter might as well get one big enough to handle the 75 so itll save some money and if current is to much add a ball valve and restrict the flow some

Wet dry! Stick a 30g wet dry under there. Overfiltration > underfiltration

30g is small for discus. As for filters I would use 2 sponge filters. why? you don't need all that flow with discus and you will be doing 50% water changes every day with a tank that small. if they are not adult and you are growing them out you can not put anything black in the tank. that will make the fish get peppered. (small black spots) Also are you trying to breed? If so you will need RO/ID water. there is a lot to know about discus...

There is a lot of discouragement here. Two small discus will be fine in a planted 30 gal bowfront with daily to alternate daily water changes and sponge filtration... For a MONTH. If your new 75 gal is going to be ready in a month, then I'd say you're fine to have them stay in the small tank for 4 weeks, but please do be careful and be ready to handle any signs of stress/peppering.

As for filtration on the 75 gal more permanent home... I'd have to agree with mistahoo. Wet/dry for sure, and as on either a spray bar canister or HOB, like crazy42bmx suggested.

Get an AC70 as a filter for the 30 gallon.

I sure was. The filtration was inadequate to begin with, you had him in there with all sorts of random tankmates, and you had no stated plans of upgrading.

Only reason I said to slap a 30gal wet/dry under there is because when you're ready for your 75g, the 30g wet dry would be still be great filtration and more so than a canister suitable for a 30g. With canisters, as you upgrade the flow increases and looking at the long run (75g) you'd want a 2217 (maybe 2) or possibly an FX5. With either option, you'd need to dial the flow back for the discus. Dialing back flow is just a waste on a canister IMO. With a wet dry, you can just stick a small pump on it (Bonus:smaller pumps are much cheaper). Wet dry filters seem to work much better with slower flow anyways (at least mine do). Plus you get a surface skimmer if you use a HOB or corner overflow box. With a canister, usually a protein layer (looks oily) will build up on the top of the water. HOB filters and overflow boxes will break this up.

Definitely. Slower flow = more contact time = more biofiltration... which is more suitable for the pristine waters preferred by discus anyway.
