  • Substrate question

In the next month or so I am going to re-work my 150g tank and make it a new home from my Discus. I have pool sand it in now and while I like it, I am thinking of going with a black sand (black blasting sand) to dress it up some.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to purchase it? I have tried to google it but no luck.

    Thanks.

I would stay away from black sand for discus bc some will get pepper . I think reg pfs should be fine and would look more natural for them just my 2 cents

I had not heard that it will cause them to pepper, glad to know that now rather than later... Thanks

mostly the pigeon bloods pepper. My orange PBs peppered. All the others i have don't show any peppering on black substrate. I have read the red melons will but mine do not.

You have some options for black sand. There's the Black Tahitian Moon Sand which is very pricey but looks the best imo. Petco Black Sand. Eco Complete Black Sand. Then there's the cheap alternative, black sandblasting media which can be found at Tractor Supply Co. (black diamond) and Clemtex (black beauty). I might have left some out, but these are the ones I know of and have heard good things besides the discontinued brands. I've only used the black diamond. If you decide to use sandblasting media, prepare to wash it for a while. It took me much longer to clean it compared to PFS as it's coal slag abrasive.

+1 on the Tahitian moon sand. Worth the extra penny if you can save up for it, and it doesn't require endless washing either.

Should be where you work. Petsmart carries it

Thank you all for the information. my 2 PB have a little peppering anyway so maybe the black substrate would not make a difference. I am not going to change anything around yet, have to wait till I find hoes for all my livestock in my 150g before I can start making changes.
