  • Tank Temps - AC Broken

Not sure what section to post this question, but wanted to see what others do when in this situation. My AC unit for my upstairs broke down sometime yesterday. Most likely will not get someone out until at least tomorrow to look at the problem.

I have two 10gal tanks upstairs, and neither tank even reached 80 degrees yesterday. Yesterday was cloudy and the air temp upstairs only reached 82. Today however will be in the mid 90s and sunny, so i have no idea how hot it will get upstairs or how hot that will raise water temps while i am at work.

    My questions are:

    1) Being a beginner to inverts, at what point would nerites and RCS start to have a problem with water temp? Or would plants start to decay? Only fish upstairs are mollies and giant danios and i saw them take a very hot water temp (92F) when the heater never shut off a few months back.

    2) What are ways you have used to keep water cooler in a pinch? All I can think of is cool water changes when i get home tonight (if needed) or a fan.

Heater is unplugged in one tank, and the heater in the second tank has a sensor so it shouldnt turn on. Both rooms have a ceiling fan running.

If you have a fan to put across the tops. they should be fine. maybe a fan in the stairway to bring a little cool air upstairs.

Increase surface agitation to keep your water oxygenated. Higher temps mean less oxygen in the water although that's not as big of a deal with invertebrates. Like Troy said, a fan pointed at the top will help cool it. I've got tanks out in the garage with no AC or fan and they are fine. I think you'll be OK.

Both the fan and increasing oxygenation is a great idea. Snails will be fine in the higher temp, however, having a fan to it will help. The RCS should be fine, but IME, Neos like cooler water. So again, fan is a good idea to keep on all day until it's fixed. Plants will be fine. Mollies and giant danios fine be fine as well.

In a pinch, use ice bags. Be extra cautious using ice bags. You don't want the temp to swing too fast. Make sure you monitor the temp. Try not to let the shrimp touch it or they may start to die off
