I have Brown Algae Dust and Green Water at the same Time..

The 75 gallon tank is fully cycled. It's lightly stocked. The fish seem to be ok. 3 cory's, 3 oto's, 4 rainbow, 10 neon tetras.

I'm lighted/medium planted with crypts, red ludwigia, amazon swords, and dwarf hair grass.

I recently upped my liquid fertilizer, using a modified PPS Pro method. I think that may have been cause of the green water, and the spike in nitrates.

I was dosing Seachem Nitrogen, when my Tap already had nitrogen in it. I'm dosing Seachem Excel, Seachem Phosphorous, Seachem Potassium, Seachem Comprehensive.

I just switched to dry fertz, but haven't been dosing that much now that I have these water issues.

Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, and Nitrates at around 20-40 - 80 (in the red range). I'm using the API Master Kit liquid tests.

I've been reading about several possible methods.

    • A black out method w /no lights for several days.
    • UV Sterilizer
    • No More Algae liquid
    • Small Water changes

I've done a two pwc's <30% this week. I can't do a pwc >50%. My tap water is has some ammonia in it, but I use Prime so it's been manageable in keeping the stock alive.

Have you guys had any success with a UV Sterilzer?

What do you suggest in dealing with the green water?

What do you suggest in dealing with the brown algae?

Should I continue dosing fertz? And maybe layoff the nitrogen fertz?

    What do you think?

    Thanks

2 day black out should knock it out. Certainly would recommend adding as many plants as you can get ahold of. Thickly stocking plants can deter algal outbreaks and remove as your preferred plants fill in.

UV works but 2day blackout is a lot cheeper.

I used one of those cheap uv lights from petsmart(green killing machine) when I had my 75g and the water went green. Looked like yours. Cleared it up pretty quick. There an eyesore, but deffinintly do the job

                Appreciate the feedback.

Yeah I think I'm call a couple of places to see if they have a UV Sterilzer.
I keep breaking the blackout trying to see if it cleared up lo

I got a bottle of water clarify from Tetra in the meantime...

                So time will tell

the blackout or sterilizer should work. more dense plant coverage will deter algae too as mnemenoi pointed out.

i generally stay away from water clarifiers. they can work in a pinch, but its just introducing more chemicals. your partial water changes are better. you are adding in fresh water on top of removing the particles completely from the environment.
