like the title states what is the routine for adding a canister filter to a 65 gallon tank? I want to replace my HOB with a canister possibly. the tank is up and running now can it be done running? what are the pros on drilling in the tank? thanks for the responses in advance. I am a beginner to this stuff so don't lay in to meDSCN1142.jpg

Leave the HOB running for a couple of weeks while the canister becomes seeded with bacteria. If your asking can you add the canister without draining the water or removing the fish, the answer is yes, just fill up the canister, attach the input and output hoses and get it primed and started. I wouldn't drill a freshwater tank unless it's either a very large >120 gallon tank, or a tank that needs to handle a really large fish load. A sump, set up correctly will give you better filtration than a canister or HOB

Canister filter is easy. As everyone said, run both for about 2 week. the canister will seed and you can remove the HOB.. Sumps are nice but an Ehiem 2217 or pro. Evan fluval 405 or X5. Would give great filteration.
The only pro to drilling a tank. You can run an over flow and sump or closed loop. you don't need to drill to run either.Nothing Kills Evil Like a Sharp Stick...

Some people run media like carbon and chemipure in little bags to help polish the water and remove harmful compounds. Also you can throw your heater in here and it'll be one less thing to distract the eye in the display tank. I wouldn't do a sump if your new to fish unless there's a specific reason for it. What fish do you have in there?
