  • Goldfish

I'm a newbie and I need help in choosing what fish to put in our aquarium. The kind that is pleasing to the eyes and easy to take care of. Thanks.

To hobbiest all fish are pleasing to the eyes. The trick is to choose fish that you like. It doesn't matter what others think. Your fish are not their fish. Goldfish are pretty but are cold water fish, and some grow to be 3 feet long. Other fish like warm. Not all fish will live together.
As for picking out fish. Start looking at picture of fish and see what you think is pretty.

It would help to tell us the size of your tank and whether you intend to add live plants. You mention goldfish in your post. One rule of thumb for fancy goldfish (the double tail varieties don't grow as large as the single tail varieties) is 20 gallons for the first goldfish and an additional 10 gallons for each additional goldfish. Use substantial filtration. Goldfish will gobble up most plants. The exceptions are Java moss, Java fern and the Anubias (and you should use a bit of hardscape to protect where their tendrils go into the substrate if possible).

        +1 to the comments above.

Goldfish with plants are hard, but not impossible

Most plants aren't suitable for goldfish tanks. Just as I wrote above. Well, unless your intention is to feed your goldfish.

I don't think your plants had anything to do with your goldfish being sick

Honestly a lot more plants are safe with Goldfish than most people think... the vast majority of what you can find for sale at your average pet store here in Houston is probably fine with goldfish provided you can provide enough light. The best thing about keeping goldfish with plants is they provide plenty of fertilizer... so you definitely don't need to dose!!
