  • Help with ich

Ok, I think my fish have ich and I bought Rid-ich plus from Petsmart today. I have a few questions.

First is it safe for my pleco and my loaches? It says it contains formaldehyde 4.26%(11.52% formalin) and zinc-free chloride salt of malachite green. It doesn't say that it is harmful to scaleless fish.

Second question is on dosing. Directions say to do a 25% or more water change before each dose. Dose is 5ml for every 10 gallons and standard dosing is every 24 hours. My question is after the first dose, do I only add more medication for the amount of water I replace with a w/c, or should I keep using the dose I did the first time?

Turn your heater up to 86F, if you dont have one get one. You can add salt to help with the ich too.

When I used the stuff you have I used per gallon. I used it only once as high temp and salt where enough to kill it.

Ok, I will buy some salt tomorrow. When you said you used the ich stuff per gallon do you mean you changed 20 gallons of water, so you dosed for the 20 gallons of fresh water to the tank?

I doses for the size of the tank, look for a thread I started about my loaches havig ich. I dosed with salt per the report recommendations in that thread, you need to heat your tank to 86F too.

Im a little bit drunk right now and cant remember dosing ..

I've had the best success cranking the temp in the tank up to 90 degrees in conjunction with Morton's table salt.

Love that line and certainly been there before on the box, LOL. Trying to explain something, but too drunk to remember all the details, will explain in the morning...

if it has dye in it,not good for scaleless fish like loaches.probably wont kill them, but they not gonna like it.aquarisol will take a day or two longer but easier on fish

It generally not a good idea if it is iodized. Sea salt or natural salt with no additives is what you will need

Ok, I have been doing some reading and someone was saying that plecos can't tolerate very much salt. I have,a 75 gal and I put in 3 teaspoons.

It really depends on the species, many are intolerant though some are. What species do you have? General description would help in identification or a picture if you have one.

neon and cardinal tetras, clown loaches, ghost catfish, rainbow shark, and a common pleco.

Neons, Cardinal, and Glass catfish would be what species I'd be worried about. Clown loaches are usually fairly tough and do well in hard water cichlid tanks, while common plecos breed in Buffalo Bayou, they'll be fine.
