Re: Use salt water filter for fresh water tank?
Sure, as long as you can wash all the salt out/off of it. I've done it more than once. A few of my tank setups were bought as used saltwater setups. I've even used the substrate - just lots of rinsing. No problems with any of them. The ultimate oxymoron - Narcolepsy and ADHD.
Who says you can`t have it all??!!

I dont believe a protein skimmer would be as effective in freshwater than in saltwater.. but I could be mistaken.
The rest of the filter system should work well for you.
Just do what the people above said, clean and replace any and all pads and sponges.

Regular filters (canister, HOB) are fine.
A protein skimmer will do nothing at all for a freshwater tank except be an expensive air pump. It's the salinity of the water in a saltwater tank that allows protein skimmers to form *very* small bubbles that take impurities out. When run in fresh water, skimmers make big bubbles which don't help at all with filtration.

Most canisters and HOB filters can be used in both salt and fresh water.
should be fine once you change out the filter media for new ones.
