There is a type that you have to manually turn on. The battery lasts over 30 hours.
There is a type that will automatically kick on when the power is out. This type is expensive and the battery won't last long.

LOL that's true. Depend on how much you want to spend, generator goes anywhere between $1500 for the gasoline operated one and 15K for natural gas. The latter can be hooked up to your power supply grid and will kick on automatically. It can provide power for some basic items like lighting, refrigerator, AC...

if you ever wonder what all you can run on that generator look at all your electrical components, each should have a marking of their power consumption either in amps or in watts. if your are trying to figure out how many watts something is that is labeled in amps multiply the voltage by the amps. for instance (just an example) I have a tank heater labeled as drawing 1.66 amps. so if I take 1.66 amps and multiply it by available voltage/or rated voltage of 110 I get 182.6 watts. so we can just round that to 200watts. you can use this calculation to give a reasonable estimate of generator needed. also when choosing a generator don't just look at peak output, look for running output and base your calculation off of that.

I worked at HFT. for 2 years. That's not a bad generator. They are a terrible co. to work for but I love some of the things they sale.

a lot of my bigger tools come from there.

def need fuel though, that's the draw back but then again dead batteries are a drawback too. I will prolly get a generator though, I really need one for the house.
