How necessary do you think test kits are

I've had fish for over 5 years and never used a test kit. Most of the fish I've owned were pretty hardy but I'm thinking about getting tropheus.

Do you think I'm going to need a test kit or is it really a waste of money for someone who does a 25% water change every other week?

with tropheus a 25% water change is nothing , usually most people change 75% to 90% this will trigger breading also .

I only use test kit after a hard rain of few days with rain is a safety net that I always have on hand especially with expensive fish .
