Fish friendly filter intakes

Any ideas on an intake piece for my Canister filters. I have gotten some fish sucked in and they die. I currently have a filter sponge covering the intakes but the sponge seems to get sucked in and causes the filter to pump less water and sometimes stop all together. Any tips on a home made product and a link to purchase a product would be great. Filters in question are cascade 1000's.

No guarantee because I don't have one but does it look like it will work? Remember it is just for the strainer.
