    Re: Substrate

Was great to meet you too....while we were over there i was explaining to fishlady that some times it sounded as if you and fshfrk were talking some foriegn language with all the lingo and scientific names you two were throwing out 8O ....what is SBS? Silica Based Substate?? And yes, I believe any type of sand would restrict an UGF.
    A mouth will say anything....:ym_chatterbox:....Take a picture!!!!

      Re: Substrate

you could probably use a reverse flow UGF... and it would help keep the fish poo from accumulating on the bottom.  you would definitely want to use a coarser grade of sand like the PFS so you werent just floating sand in the water column.

SBS...sand blasting sand...but I like your take on it too... :)

I think that the sand would compact too tight for a reverse UG, unless you are using a strong powerhead, and even then, the path of least resistance would probably be right back up the tube...??

Actually HH, the ought grain size allows sufficient flow through conventional UGF plates, provided the substrate thickness doesn't get more than a couple inches. The fines do have to be sifted out before you put it in the tank. I used a colander and a 5 gal bucket of water. Worked perfectly. I learned about the ought sized sand from Bill Wimmer, former owner of University Pets. It's all he used in his tanks at the store. He owns PhD Pets in Galveston, now, and still uses the same substrate.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

I believe that I have seen the ought sand you are talking about....I'm new to the whole sand thing so when I said sand, my minds eye has the basic size sand pictured. The stuff I have looks big to me....

speaking of sand, I have run into a little snag with the black sand shipment, it will be delayed about a week.
