Re: Diatom filter?
I have 3 and one for parts.
They are a pain to set up and get started but once you have them running they pollish the water cleaner than any other filter.
They will take the brown tint out of the water in a soft acid aquarium.(peat/oak leaves etc)
Anheauser-Bush uses diatom filters to take the haze out of their beer before they bottle it. (I automated some of their plants also)'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: Diatom filter?
i just see the pictures of ek's tanks and wonder how he makes the water that clear. Â mine look that clear from the front but when you look down the length of the tank it looks nothing like ek's. Â How long do you leave these things running? Â are they continuous? Â Maybe a short description of how to set it up since it is said that it can be a pain. Â Thanks shawnI love my Fahaka "Peter" puffer.

Re: Diatom filter?
Add 1 cup of diatom powder and fill canister with water.
Insert the top which includes the filter pad, cover and motor.
Secure cover and shake a bit.
Insert inlet and outlet tubing in your tank and turn on. Â
Estimated time to polish your water is 1 minute per gallon. Â
I would stir up the gravel before turning on. Â It would polish my 125g in about an hour and a half.
When done, take it outside and rinse filter pad with water hose and rinse canister. Â
That's it.Raul

Re: Diatom filter?
Didn't magnum filters used to have a diatom filter and come with the diatomateous earth too?
I agree with the others....a very good filter for cleaning the water crystal clear....

Re: Diatom filter?
i was reading and it said that hot magnum had a filter media bag that you could buy with diatom. Â but did not work as well. Â Diatom filter have high pressure pumps and force the water through the diatom verses just flowing water through like the hot magnum. Â I dont know from experience though.I love my Fahaka "Peter" puffer.

Re: Diatom filter?
I was amazed at the difference it makes. Â I think there is skill involved in starting one especially for beginners. Â I follow the procedure on the company website which is the same as mentioned above except they suggest crimping the outlet, turning on the unit and letting the diatom powder coat the bag for 2 minutes.Painting the world with drool and poop since 2007! ~ Papa Greg

Re: Diatom filter?
I find it easier to set up the filter w/o the diatom powder on a 1g pickle jar and after it is running add the diatom powder to the jar.
Then when all the powder has been cleaned out of the jar and the bag is well coated, I move it to my aquarium.
But you have to be gentle or you will knock the powder off and have to start all over again.'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
