neons, tetras, swords, platty's, all kinds of wee little ones, maybe up to 30 or more....depends on their size....

If you want to keep bigger cichlids,  like peacocks and angles and others...get a bigger tank.

Guppies are a good little fish to put in a small tank but if you put too many females in the tank with some males, well lets just say your gona need a bigger tank!    I think you can put 25 guppies in a 10 gallon tank.
Fish are people too, they just have gills.

I am with Honkzz...  Shell dwellers... get some Neolamprologus multifasciatus -- there are plenty of boxers I know that sell them :)
They are easy to take care of, they spawn easy in a 10g tank.  All they want are shells and sand bottom and they are in heaven.

You should consider the amount of time and $$$ you are willing to invest.
Obviously for a small tank you will want small fish.
A planted tank and dwarf chiclids will require a lot more time and effort than
shellies or other hard water fish which of cource will cost you more $$$ than
the common livebearers and small tetras, barbs & corrys that you find at wallyworld.
But I still enjoy my cheap & easy livebearers

If I was to set up a small tank like a 10 gallon tank, I would use aqua soil and go with some low light plants and a few nice looking neons and or rasbora's, a few shrimp and a couple loaches, like yoyo's. Maybe a panda cory or a pair.

But xsnay on the arrowanay.... :)

Betas do nice in a well planted 10 gallon.  Killifish are fun you can even order eggs from ebay or aquabid.com.

I think the red-tail would cover that department. The Pacu would be more for the "cool" factor, you could tell your friends it's a piranha.
