  • TexBlast blasting sand....

I have a few questions and didn't want to jack someone else's thread so....

I recently aquired some TexBlast SBS....I've never used sand before and would really appreciate some input on what I need to do to add this to my 100g cichlid tank....It's an 'old' tank with a slate bottom and alot of nice scratches, but it's mine and I like it....

Right now I have an UGF with several inches of Lowes pea gravel over it. I want ALL that out....I have bought a mag9 pump and am going to build a DIY wet/dry. And after visiting fshfrk's house yesterday I believe that I will be making a small 'foam filter' out of a maxijet 1200 that I have....so anyways, this is what I need to know....

    Is this the right stuff?
Is it heavy enough grade to put in my tank?
How deep should I layer the sand?

Judging by the picture it looks like a large grain sand which is good.  Do you know what gauge the sand is.  Like "0" "00".  ot, double ot.  I dont like to put too thick of a covering of sand.  The thicker it is the deeper poop nasties can get.  I have mine about an inch thick.  maybe two inches in some place.

        The bottom picture looks good
The next one up looks lilke it has the fines that give me trouble.
Drop a handful through a large glass of water and see if it all sinks or if it leaves behind a cloud of fines that take longer to settle
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

You'll probably want to rinse it to get any dust off it.

For pool filter sand the method I use is:

-pour a gallon or gallon and a half of the sand into a 5 gallon bucket.
-Add water till it is 3 or 4 inches above the level of the sand
-Stir sand with hand really getting all of it to move around and make sure you get all the way to the bottom.
-pour off the now cloudy water
-Repeat several times untill the water isnt getting clouded up when you stir

you can also check to see if there are a large amount of fines by seeing how fast it settles after you stop stirring it.

For new pool filter sand I usually rinse it 3 or 4 times like that.

Ok, here it is....straight out of the bag, no rinsing done. Took less than a minute....

I have used that one in the past and have not had any problems with it. I did rinse quite a bit before putting into aquarium.

maybe rinsing will help.  It looks a little fine to me.  The lower picture looks like a lot larger grain.

Ever try to haul a fish in with one hand and take a pic at the same time? This was easier!

With a bit of rinsing that would probably work very nicely.

anything that floats for more then a couple seconds should rinse away pretty easily

                          Re: TexBlast blasting sand....

HH, that looks smaller than the ought size I use. It also looks to have a lot of fines in it. I'd separate those fines from the larger grains before putting it in the tank. I've used a lot of blasting sand in my tanks over the years and this method works best for me:

                          1. Fill a 5 gallon bucket with water.
                          2. Put a good amount of the dry sand in a kitchen colander. I have one dedicated to fish stuff. I used my ex-wifes kitchen colander once...now I'm divorced.
                          3. Lower the colander into the bucket and swirl like you're panning for gold, except don't let the sand go over the side of the colander. The fines will run out through the holes in the colander and leave the big grains behind.
                          4. Pour the large grains from the colander into another bucket.
                          5. Repeat 1 through 4.

In bags that are mostly fines, I lose most of the contents and wind up with very little thats useful for UGF. The old TexBlast ought sized sand had maybe a couple pounds of fines in 80 pounds of sand. If you leave the fines in, it will eventually settle to the bottom, rest on top of the filter plates and clog them.

You can try landscaping companies and or equipment rentals yards, or maybe those quarry yards that sell stone and rock.
