Prosper and Shannon at Aqua Zoo have the "O" size.

They also have several hundred pounds of the original Tex Blast sand.

I use Sand Blast sand like shown in upper pic. It took me awhile to rinse it. I use it with canister filters and do not have a problem.

I use Leslie's pool supply sand.  The nice thing about it is that its "super" clean, and I dont have to wash it at all.  Now its uniform in color and basically an off white color.  But so far no issues with it going all over the place in my tanks.

I'd be hesitant to recommend not rinsing the leslies sand... I always seem to rinse off a lot of foggy water the first few rinse cycles I do on it...

Its cleaner than some of the other sands, that's for sure.  Even says pre-rinsed if I remember correctly, but I suggest rinsing it a couple of times to get the dust out of it.  It works really well.

How fine is the Leslie's?  Is it as bad as sugar sand as far as ease of "stirring" up in a constant moving colony of Tropheus?

                  Re: TexBlast blasting sand....

I've used Leslie's pool supply sand too - liked it.  Just make sure you stir it up in the tank every so often, otherwise you get "dead areas" which build up nasty gasses (that are also toxic and stink horribly).

I would be hesitant to use nearly anything that could be classified as "sand" with a ugf due to potential for clogging the plates.  Maybe a fix for thatwould be to put a layer of thin sponge (with pores smaller than the sand) or some poly fiberfill (aka filter floss) over the filter plates.  I think if I went with fiberfill, I'd cut a piece of fiberglass windowscreen material and put that between the floss and the plate.

Just my .02 (which is probably worth only .000001).

One of these days I'm gonna get over to fshfrk's  - that's been on the the 'agenda' for several months now....  :(
Unfortunately work has been taking nearly all my spare time, and what's left is just enough to maintain tanks/boyfriend/house/etc - although the last 2 have slipped tremendously - cause FISH COME FIRST!   Good thing the b/f is aware of that last part  .

                    Re: TexBlast blasting sand....

To add to this.. I have two tanks I added it to without rinse at all.. 0 (zero) cloudy or dirt found in it when I installed it into mu 75 and 70.. and when I get the 110 up and running I am going to pour it into that tank and I promise you with the success I have had, I am not going to rinse it.
The main reason is because pool filter sand like rrocket says its pre-rinsed and because they dont want a cloud of this going into a persons pool because I could not imagine the number of people being upset if they installed this in their filter and their pool became cloudy.  Think of the number of phone calls Leslie's would have to tell people "in time it will clear up"

                      Re: TexBlast blasting sand....

i too used pool filter sand but not with an undergravel. i did read in a book once about putting a layer of gravel over the plates and then a very fine screen/ then layering with sand so you could use sand with an undergravel. i thought the idea kinda strange, but my guess is the author of the book was an old timey purist who liked to use undergravels in all their tanks. seems more work then needed. now didnt you say you were going to use a wet/dry, are you still going to use the undergravel at all? because if you arent then it doesnt really matter too much.
