A good friend of mine is a  Master Craftsman with 20 years experience designing and building homes.  He's also an ex-fish person.  I've been so excited about the Houston fishbox and getting into the hobby that he has agreed to get into custom cabinet/hood making for fish tank owners.  We want to see what interest there is in the community for custom builds.

We can offer anything from a bare bones stand, unfinished to a complete stand with all the bells and whistles.  We will be using professional techniques and equipment to make professional quality tanks stands and light hoods.  Whatever you idea, if it can be built, we will build it.  If you have a design/plans/idea for your dream set-up, send me a PM and we can discuss the plans/drawings.

Pick your design, your desired materials (wood, steel, glass inserts), hardware, finish (bare, stained, polished) and we will work up a cost sheet for it.

I got my eyes on a couple tanks right now that will be needing stands.

As a suggestion, you guys should come up with "production grade" 55, 75/90, 120/140, 125/150 gallons stands that all someone has to do is pick the color.

I second the motion for multiple "standard" tank size stand designs availabe to chose from.

For Example - How much for a standard pine wood stand, sanded smooth and stained in a medium walnut color. 72X18 -  24 inches tall ?

Ok.  Good suggestions.  Obviously there is interest in this so we can move forward.  We could use everyone's help in working up a product line to offer.  Since this is brand new (to us), I'm open for suggestions.  Maybe some of you that are in the fish business would be kind enough to help.

Well, I'm not into the "fish business" but I would suggest that you guys consider coming up with a "menu" if you will for your stands, canopys etc...

The most popular tanks are the standard 55 gallon 48X13 or there abouts, same for the 75 gallon, standard size is roughly 48X18, well, I suggest you study the market and see how the "typical" stand is made, and how you two might be able to copy and or improve on it in a economical way.

If you can provide a comparable stand for less money, your not only going to have a fair amount of consistent orders, but you just may have local fish stores contacting their local mercenary contacts.... :)

look at the 55's 75's 125's for the most part....they will cover the 90 and 135 as well, I think....good luck to you two.

I want a custom stand, but I dont' wanna pay custom prices.....  Get used to that one.... :)

Dont limit yourself to standard production tanks. If your guy is good at building stands and canopy similar to mine I can direct him to a good source.

After some discussion, we're going to offer some production models, simple & reseasonably priced, as well as the custom end of things.  Either way, the end product will be a higher quality cabinet than what you could get in the stores.  I've received several requests and look forward to filling them.

Did anything ever come of this?  I may be in the market for a 20 Long stand soon but I'd like to get one made that is taller (maybe 40-45 inches tall) than are generally available in the stores.

IKE really delayed this side project but we are still going to do this.  Sorry for the delay but carpenters and craftsmen are in high demand right now.  I just bought a 75g today and will build a model for people to see an example of our work.  It's starting to happen.

ya if you post some examples of stuff like some of the stand ADA makes are unbelievable and unbeleviably expensive

We met last night to discuss.  It should be a fun learning experience building the first one.  As I was pricing my costs for materials, I realized that the words "budget" and "custom" don't belong in the same sentence.  haha.  I'll post some pics when it's done.  Probably in the next week or so given the fact that we are busy with our "real" jobs.
