Fish for a new tank.

Hey y'all, Found HFB on google, I love what I can find with google.

I just bought  a new "used" 30 gallon Oceanic hex from craigslist.......
I've cleaned the tank, added new black gravel and silk plants, Tank has an emperor 280 hob filter with a new bio wheel, the original bio was crushed.
Water has been in the tank for about 2 day now, working on a fishless cycle.

I've been thinking about Angle fish, but from what I've been reading, they will outgrow the tank in about 8 to 12 months????
Its going to be a while before I can get a larger aquarium.
I've seen some Tiger Oscar's at Petco, but i also think they will outgrow the tank quick.
What other fish can I look at?

Maybe a nice community tank....some tetras, and other community fish, possibly a few catfish and some cool plecos.

Definately... need some cool pleco's.

Perhaps a raphael catfish or two.

Well, compared to a 30g long tank you have relatively more middle space and less bottom and surface.

Look for fish with their mouth in the middle of their face rather than the top or bottom.
Tetras, zebras,
Barbs, Dwarf Cichlids

Of course you still need a few CAKs for a cleanup crew, perhaps a botea to keep the snail population down and a ABN pleco or two, to eat the algae
Consider a few swordtails or large mollies to eat on the surface & make the flake food sink.

I'm thinking about some cardinals treas, and definitely Corey cats, and maybe a pleco.
I've also loved tiger barbs - thought about a school of barbs
looks like the Oscars are a no go also - grow to fast.

Not only are Oscars a no-no for that size tank they also eat fish. so all those fish that you want will become food.
I think if you get baby angels one or two will do fine in that height tank.

If I was to get 2 baby angles, how fast would they out grow the tank?
I've also heard you should keep a single or more than 4 angles, as 2 or 3 could fight or pick on the weeker angle......
I know the oscars need to be with there own kind as the others would be food.

PhishPhreek mentioned some decent options - tetras, danios, mollies, platies, swordtails, guppies, corydoras and some of the smaller barbs would be great choices. Dwarf rainbowfish would also work.

As eklikewhoa mentioned, one or two small angels will work in an Oceanic 30g hexagonal tank. They would apreciate it if moved to a larger tank eventually.

fun size tank but you have to make choices that will not outgrow in a short time.     maybe look up a couple favorites while googling and see what compatable tank mates would go w/ them.

Welcome to the box fishblock...glad you made your way to us on the internet superhwy.....
the angels you could have approx. 2 in there and they would stay small enough for about a few months to accomadate the tank size you have.....a nice school of neon tetra's or guppies would be great....definately have to have a nice pleco...but i would go with a bristlenose instead of a regular pleco those regular's can get to be monsters in no time.....
maybe about 3-4 bolivian rams....calvus....it really depends on what you want to have in there that's going to be the difference.....you could even go with a nice little shoal of shell dwellers in there as well.....the possibilities are endless ...so have fun.....and make sure that tank is cycled well before adding fishies.......

i second the rams, although german blue rams are nicer (in my opinion) but they are a tad more difficult to keep than the bolivian rams.

With a 30G tank, I would think what most people here have been saying.
I would go with a Tetra setup, with a couple of either German Ram's or Apisto's (get some from Dan (www.houstonaquariumwarehouse.com) they are so good looking) You can go with some Nanochromis if you like Congo dwarf cichlids..
Setup your tank with some heavy planting with a root in the tank.
Clean up crew of about 3-5 pepper cory's or alike and I would get about 4-6 otto's for plant cleaning, and I would go with 3 smaller Botia fish (yoyo or zebra) to hold down your snail population if that causes a problem.
Make sure that your tank has several small caves for the botia to hide in, and your dwarf cichlids to have a place to retreat into if they are scared.

Those are my 2.5 - 3 cents worth.

OK, here is what I'm planning right now
a school of cardinals  (6 or so)
a pair or two  of German blue rams
3 or 4 albino Cory's
1 or 2 small angle fish (still undecided)

Zulaab - what do you mean by a root in the tank? are you talking about drift wood?  where is the best place to buy one?

Angel fish can be a bit aggressive, I think the cardinals are a bit small to keep with them.  So I would suggens some larger tetras, Emerors, or redfins, black neons, etc.   You know the angel fish will get BIG, which is a good excuse to buy a bigger tank
