When you have to tie a 2x4 to your waist to keep from falling in, THATS TOO BIG.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Hey, thanks for all the great replies... I will take all things into consideration... Not sure when I will make the purchase... but I am looking for large...... I will have to figure out which wall to put it on.. I may have to move my 125 to another office... will keepyou guys in tune when I get this tank.... thanks again..Cope
Had about 900 gallons now I am tired and selling them off...
A ladder will get you to the top, but you still have to hang over the side. I got tired of that 32" deep 150 I had pretty fast, even though it did fit the spot nicely. I'm all for other people having 300 gallon tanks, though.... I love to see 'em !
but I understand.....cleaning it can be a b-i-t-c-h. I got a canopy on my 75 and I have a hard time cleaning the bottom.....just makes me mad some times! :furious:
I hardly siphon the bottom of my tank anymore.... super high circulation keeps detritus suspended so the filters get it. I use a stick to stir my sand and that's about it.
24" tall is about as high as I can clean, and still I use a uh, stepstool (2 catlitter buckets, with a 2x10 across them, buckets stack and fit in stand, board slips behind stand - out of view). I'll be setting up my 300 soon, and I think the challenge on it will be that it's the reverse of most that i've seen in that it's 8' wide x 2' tall x 2.5' (30") front to back. I have yet to determine how tall I'll build the stand. When shopping for stands, height is important - especially if you're planning to put a tall wet/dry under it, and want to be able to remove the portion containing the bioballs without having to pull the entire wd out. (I've got interference problems of that nature on my 100gal, that's why I mention it). Also, if you plan on placing it behind a sofa or something, you want a tall enough stand that you can see the whole tank.
I'm sure there are other things to consider - those are just things I have had to deal with. I'm tossing around the idea of building a stand for the 300 that is tall enough to have 2 tanks below it, with footprint sizes of about 3'x 1' - which should still allow enough room behind them for 2 wet/drys (one at each end of tank, both with filter capacity of 200 gal) and 2 canister filters for the smaller tanks. I will probably utilize a good deal of angle iron for this, so that structural stability isn't compromised. I will probably have to inset this into a wall so that I can access it from behind. Just sharing the idea - possibilities for all sorts of configurations exist with a large stand, much dependant though on whether you want a pre-made stand, or if you'll make (or have made) a custom one, to your particular specifications. Note though, that if you get an acrylic tank, the entire bottom requires support, unlike glass tanks, where you can just about frame the outer edges, leaving the stand "hollow" on top (handy for looking up into caves for eggs/fry/etc) .
