  • 55 or 75 gallon tank

I'm wanting to get another tank but cant deside on the size.  I'm looking at an Oceanic 55 , or a 75 gallon tank.
I was thinking about maybe trying some discus. Never seen them before I went to Dan's and I think there a cool looking fish.
What do I gain with the larger tank other than 20 more gallons and a wider tank?

... a greater stability of water chemistry, more aquascaping potential, the ability to get more fish ...

I really don't care for the footprint of a 55, and I really like the footprint of a 75. Go with a 75.
So many things can be a mystery, when all we're seeking is freedom...

        Bigger the better!!
Unless you are tight on space.. I'd go with the 75.
The 55 is really skinny... you don't get the perception of depth (width) that the 75gal offers.
The depth (width) of the 75 allows for much better schooling if you get a few.
Some discus can get large!  6" - 8" The bigger the more space to swim & school

And like Raul mentioned... larger volume = more stable water parameters.

Even though most domestics are pretty hardy, they do have some unique quirks. I would do a little bit more research on discus before taking the plunge.

                money is not an issue

                space is not an issue

OK, sounds like a 75 should be the tank.
I found a good deal on a 90 gallon tank, witch is a little taller than the 75.
Will an emperor 400 with a power head on the other side of the tank for flow be enough filter
                  or will I need more?

you should put an ehiem 2217 on there too.....along with what you had planned....i run a 2217, 250 powerhead and an emperor 400 on the one i have.....it works great ....but that's just my humble opinion too...

If you are going to go with the discus, then I would definately beef up my filtration. Either add another Emp. 400 or add a canister.

                        Discus?

I would consider a lot more filtration on that tank.

over filtration is better than under filtration.

but if you're going to change you water 100% everyday.....you should be able to get away with less.

You still need to oxygenate the water regardless of how often you change water.

Discus prefer warmer temps and with warmer temps there less oxygen in the water column.

OK, I'll need more filtration than one 400 hob.
whats the best way to oxygenate the water?
I think my other 30 hex tank may need more to oxygenate it,
the angles look like there breathing fast
I have a 280 emperor on the hex
