  • Moving a tank, and driftwood questions.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips involving moving a tank. It is a freshwater 55 gal and is going about 10 minutes away. I'm getting various advice on the internet, from just put the fish in buckets to individually bagged fish. I've never moved a tank this big, so any help would be great.

The second round of questions involves the ginormous piece of driftwood that I got from the auction. My eyes were a bit bigger than my tank and a 6 inch pierce is sticking up about 3 -5 inches from the water line. I've heard that having it half in and half out of the water can make the wood rot. Its turning whitish where it is by the light so I assume that it is drying out. Should it be completely submerged? Also, if I break it up so it can be submerged, then what is the easiest way to break up a large wet piece of wood?

The driftwood also has cool red moss on it...any idea what it could be?

save as much old water as possible so you dont have to recycle your tank i like to use the rubbermaid 20 gallon containers and you can just throw the fish in a bucket 10 min you dont even need an airator

If its Fresh water you dont have save the water.
I just moved a month ago a 75 from my house in Katy TX to my Mom's house in Lake Jackson.  None of the water went down there except what was in filter.
I moved at the same time about 15 full grown Malawi cichilds down there too.
I broke the tank down at 10am into the truck by noon.  Then in Lake Jackson by 1:30pm, filled it back up with rocks and everything else, by 3pm.  Had the tank up and running around 4pm filter etc, and put the fish back in.  The water temp going in was 77 and had by 5pm when we left risen to 80 which is what the heater was set to.  None of the fish has died since then and the tank is already producing fry.  I dont see any reason to keep water.
Now for a saltwater tank -- that is a WHOLE other story..  I would try and keep as much as I could of the water using some barrels.

      Just my 2c worth.

i agree with zulaab, i setup my 125g with nothing being established except  for three eheims, and put the fish in three hours after setup, and i have had no problem, going on week three of the setup, and my gymnos balzanii have breed twice, and my juvie gymno labiatus are starting do do the dance. so i think it will be fine, IMHO 8)

Well the tank got moved. It wasn't nearly the ordeal that I thought it would be. The fish were packed up in a stryofoam cooler which worked out great.

I only lost one fish, though sad it wasn't a surprise. He was a golden ram from the auction, and he had acted sickly since we got him home.

Ouch.  Sorry about your Ram (I was bidding on them also)

I don't believe that anyone of us would sell a sick fish, but being chased with a net, placed in a small bag for a long time with no food or place to hide and subjected to noise and vibration due to transportation can cause a lot of stress and make fish subject to any thing that may be present in the water around them.   In the future, you should isolate new fish and use prevenative meds or at least keep them under observation for a couple of weeks.   It's a lot less trouble than treating everyone in a large tank........
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

That was the odd thing, he never really had anything that we could tell, just was listless and hid a lot. Figured he might get used to the tank but I guess it was one move too many.  :(
