I hate to report, lost one of the angle's sometime today.
tested the waters ammonia and the nitrite again, both still show no ppm  (ammonia yellow, and the nitrite light blue)
I'm going to remove the wood, and do a water change, and see what happens.

What else can I use to give the pleco a place to hide?

i would've gone with a small powerhead with a prefilter on it and circulate the water for them.....you can adjust the output on those....but i'm afraid that your going to continue to loose the fish if you don't fix the circulation for them quickly....

the pleco can hide in anything... large pvc... broken terracotta pot etc...

OK here is the latest.....removed the driftwood, removed the Purigen and did a roughly 75% water change.
I added an air stone that's roughly 3" long, along the back wall somewhere in the middle, and an air pump.
the water level is slightly below the spill way from the filter to allow the water to "fall" from the filter to agitate the surface a little more.
tomorrow I'm going to pick up some more carbon  to add to the filter, and a small powerhead / prefilter.

Sounds like you are on the right track.

did these things seem to help at all?


what kind of test kit are you using?  Is it a strip kit, or one that uses the drops of chemicals?

if its a strip one you should get a drop one, the strip ones are notoriously innacurate.

So far so good. ammonia and nitrite are 0 ppm. so far lost only the one angle from yesterday. i guess time will tell....
I'm using a freashwater master test kit with drops.
