  • IS there a way to help my fish regrow his fins

I introduced a fish into my aggressive cichlid tank, and he didnt last a day before i had to start a tank just for him

However, he lost a substantial portion of his fin.

Are there any way to help him heal?

...that and plenty of water changes.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I agree with lots of water changes...that and plenty of good food. I don't use salt though unless I'm treating ich. FWIW, buying aquarium salt at the lfs is a waste of money. Rock salt or even table salt will work if you absolutely feel the need to add sodium ions to the tank.

Treat the wounds with mercurochrome to prevent infection.
I use Almond leaves but any antibiotic (Maracin) will help prevent fin rot.

Fish seem to heal faster in clean, low pH water (below 7.0) so change the water and meds as often as possible and add a low pH buffer.

When you reintroduce him keep an eye on him, he may try to get even. I've had recovering fish kill the aggressor when they got back in the tank.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

This is a common misconception about table salt. You'd have to add so much table salt to the water that your fish would be pickled in brine long before iodide concentration became an issue.

Melafix is good, but it is basically just diluted tea tree oil. Ask the wife or GF if she has any and just dilute it in the water. Or get some at wholefoods or almost any place that carries cosmetics. WAY cheaper than melafix and you can get the concentrations where you need them to be.

You want like 1% tea tree oil per volume of tank.

I have a 50 lb bag of pool salt, which is rock salt. Cost me $2 at H. depot.

Works great. Feel the bags though and get the one that is grains, not the ones that are formed into briquets.
